Boats with traditional hydraulic steering systems will use an Evolution autopilot driven by a hydraulic pump. The pump connects to the boat"s hydraulic steering lines and allow the autopilot to steer the boat by controlling the flow of fluid through the boat"s steering system. The hydraulic pump is controlled by the Evolution autopilot Actuator Control Unit (ACU.)

Hydraulic linear drive systems are self-contained hydraulic steering systems that allow Evolution autopilots to steer heavy displacement vessels with mechanical steering. Hydraulic linear drive systems consist of a high-performance reversing hydraulic pump, hydraulic steering ram, fluid reservoir and hydraulic lines. The system comes filled, bled and ready-to-install.

The included hydraulic steering ram will be anchored to the boat"s structural members, and attaches to the rudder stock via an independent tiller arm. Accessory fittings from your steering system manufacturer may be required.

The Type 2 configuration is suitable for vessels with up to 22,000 kg (48,000 lbs.) displacement. All Linear Hydraulic Drive systems require an Evolution ACU-400 actuator control unit.

To match a Raymarine hydraulic pump to your vessel you need to learn the size (in cubic inches) of the actual hydraulic cylinder ram or rams that are mounted to the Rudder on inboard engine boats or the ram mounted to the drive on outboard engine boats. Your steering system documentation will have this information.
