carbon vs silicon carbide mechanical seal pricelist
FSI Series 1015 mechanical cartridge seals are a premium grade product without the premium price. They"re ideal for use with most ANSI and DIN (standard and big bore) pumps and other types of pumps and rotating equipment. They have the following features:
Silicon carbide (SiC) is also known as carborundum, which is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (which need to be added when producing green silicon carbide) and so on. Silicon carbide also has a rare mineral in nature, mulberry. In contemporary C, N, B and other non-oxide high technology refractory raw materials, silicon carbide is one of the most widely used and economical materials, which can be called gold steel sand or refractory sand. At present, China"s industrial production of silicon carbide is divided into black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, both of which are hexagonal crystals with a proportion of 3.20 ~ 3.25 and microhardness of 2840 ~ 3320kg/mm2.
SiC Seal rings can be divided into static ring, moving ring, flat ring and so on. SiC silicon cab be made into various carbide products, such as silicon carbide, silicon carbide, silicon carbide ring and so on, according to the special requirements of customers. It can also be used in combination with graphite material, and its friction coefficient is smaller than alumina ceramic and hard alloy, so it can be used in high PV value, especially in the condition of strong acid and strong alkali.

Carbon-graphite and ceramic mating pair has been generally used as water pump mechanical seals of automotive engine. Silicon carbide materials are recently used in order to prevent damage of mechanical seal surfaces by hard solid substances in liquid to be sealed. The silicon carbide material has poor self-lubricity. As a result, seal surfaces sometimes seize or the secondary seal is damaged due to heat generation by friction, resulting in leakage. In order to overcome such a defect, a new carbon-graphite material, which is composed of carbon-graphite powder, chopped carbon fiber and resin, has been developed.
Wear resistance, cavitation erosion and sealing tests are performed. The results are compared with those obtained with usual carbon-graphite and silicon carbide. It is found that the carbon-graphite contained a certain amount of chopped carbon fiber has good performance as a material of water pump mechanical seals

Modern pumps, compressors, mixers, agitators and other rotary shaft equipment are assembled using either compression pump packing or mechanical seals to minimize emissions and fluid.
Compression pump packing controls leakage whereas mechanical seals will tend to stop any visible leakage all together, keeping work environment clean and hazard free.
Compared to compression packing the initial cost of a mechanical seal is high, however overtime, the associated cost accrued by using compression packing, for example power consumption, maintenance and downtime, could be far in excess of the initial cost of a mechanical seal, which works unattended for a long time.
